This question and the answer is an important one. I have gotten a number of questions like this. I have researched, and found that the Vector Smart Chargers go into an undocumented automatic float mode, simillar to the way the VEC070 works, when the battery is almost fully charged and you start with the 2 amp setting.

QUESTION:

I have tried the battery charger and I have the following problem:

Observation at 2 Amp Setting...

When I use 2 amps, the charger starts and the digital readout indicates 2.4. Then after about 30 seconds it stops and shows 0.0. Then after 3 seconds it starts again and repeats the same sequence.

Observation at 10 Amp Setting...

If I use it at 10 amps it starts and shows 6.9 down to 3.9 , then 2.9 then 0.0 and stops. The duration of this is only 3 to 4 seconds.

Observation at 20 and 35 Amp Setting...

At 20 and 35 amps it is the same like 10 amps.

Here is the type of battery I am charging: Prostart group 51; cca 500; ca 625; rc 85. Is there something wrong with the charger? Will you please let me know what to do and thank you very much for your attention.

Dear W___,

Your charger is operating correctly. Although you can set the charge rate manually, The computer controls the actual charge rate based on the size and condition and state of charge of the battery. Your battery is almost fully charged so the computer will not allow the higher charge rates. When the 2 amp setting is used with a near fully charged battery, the charger goes into an automatic float mode (not documented in the manual). In the float mode the charger comes on and off as needed to keep the battery topped off.
