How Does a Battery Work?

Definitions: I will be using some electrical terms you may not know on this page so here are some short definitions.

Electricity flowing in a wire is similar to water flowing in a pipe so I will compare the electrical terms to those used for water. Volts, Voltage -- this is the same as pressure for water in other words the force that is causing the flow. It is measured in volts.

Current -- is the amount or volume of flow it is measured in amperes or amps for short.

Watt -- this is the measure of the amount of power available as a result of the electricity flowing in the wire. It is the product of volts times amps.

Purpose: The purpose of the battery in a car is twofold. First it provides power to start the vehicle. To do this it must provide very high current for a short time. As much as 300 amps for say 30 seconds. One in good condition will provide enough current to run the starter for much longer than that but the starter will not take it. The second purpose is to filter out voltage spikes. The car's electrical system can have very high voltage spikes, for instance when the starter stops a minus 200 volt spike can occur. Large positive spikes can also occur. The battery does a good job as a filter because it acts like a large capacitor to absorb these spikes.

It is designed to provide enough power to start the motor once. Then the alternator is expected to charge it back up and also supply all of the power needed to run the other devices in operation.

We have all been let down by a dead battery at one time or another. Why does this happen? Well first there are the more obvious causes. A faulty alternator or leaving the lights on, or some other device drained the battery. But, sometimes it is a complete mystery. The alternator is good and we didn't leave the lights on and still the car won't start. This is when we usually end up buying a new one and it is always at the least convenient time and we seem to get stuck paying through the nose for it. Well those days are over.

A perfectly good battery will seem dead because of a build up of lead sulfate. These are crystals that form on its plates as a result of the chemical reaction the produces the electricity. These crystals interfere with the flow of electricity in and out. Up until now there has never been a way to remove sulfate crystal. This has resulted in hundreds of thousands of good batteries being thrown away. Now there is a solution. It is called The Battery Life Saver electronic device(BLS).
