Citizens for Safe Water are up in arms! Their "arms" are meetings, petitions, and spreading the word to say NO to fluoridation of their water supply.

Their purpose goes further: "To preserve safe drinking water and prevent addition of anything to water (other than what is necessary to make it safe to drink.)" Fluorine doesn't fall under the category of making water safe --in fact, it can cause cancer! Qualified scientists in numerous laboratory tests have found that fluoride in water, even 1.0 part per million, (the amount typically used in water fluoridation) is a carcinogen and mutagen -- an agent that causes a change in a gene or chromosome. Fluoridation of water causes 20,000 plus cancer deaths per year in the U.S.

It gets worse! Two studies from China show that the I.Q. of children decreased 5 - 10 points when on fluoride. Another study shows that fluoride accumulates in the pineal gland. There it inhibits the production of melatonin, which causes an earlier onset of puberty.

Toxicologist Phyllis Mullenix demonstrated in the mid-1980's that rats given fluoride as youngsters or adults became passive, underactive and lethargic, whereas those exposed in utero (before birth, through the mother's womb) were born hyperactive and remained hyperactive throughout life.

The list of articles from reputable scientific organizations goes on: an increase in Down's syndrome babies born to younger mothers following fluoridation, a higher incidence of hip fractures in the elderly and fluoridation. A study at India's Punjabi University shows that shows that fluorosis causes testicular damage, leading to infertility. And while aluminum in the brain is recognized as contributing to Alzheimer's Disease, evidence points toward fluoride's ability to bond with aluminum, to imitate the hydrogen ion and thus trick the blood-brain barrier, aiding aluminum's entry into brain tissue.

Remember when you were a kid and were told that fluoride prevents cavities? A study on 39,000 children age 5-17 by dentists trained by the National Institute of Dental Research shows no significant differences in fluoridated, non-fluoridated and partially fluoridated communities. A 50 year study of two New York cities, Newburgh (fluoridated water) and Kingston (non-fluoridated) showed the same, except that Newburgh had twice the number of cases of dental fluorosis!

In dental fluorosis, the enamel erodes and wears down, creating small pits and brown spots. In fluoridated communities in Canada, dental fluorosis ranges between 35 to 60% of the population. A survey in 1985 of US children ages 8-15, showed 28-76% had dental fluorosis. A Texas survey in the 80's showed that African American children were more likely than white (Hispanic or non-Hispanic) to get dental fluorosis, ratio of 2.3 to 1. With poor looking teeth being a social stigma, even children are likely to suffer discrimination from brown, eroded, fluoridated teeth.

"I say this in all earnestness and sincerity of a scientist who has spent nearly 20 years research into the chemistry, biochemistry, physiology and pathology of fluorides. Any person who drinks artificially fluoridated water for a period of one year or more will never again be the same person." Charles E. Perkins, research scientist with 20 years experience with the chemistry, biochemistry, physiology and pathology of fluorides.

Experts are speaking out against fluoridation. Dr. William Marcus, an EPA senior science adviser and toxicologist stated in "Food and Water Journal," 1998, " Fluoride is a carcinogen by any stand we use. I believe EPA should act immediately to protect the public, not just on the cancer data, but on the evidence of bone fractures, arthritis, mutagenicity and other effects." Dr. Robert Carton, a scientist who spent 20 years working for the US Environmental Protection Agency said, "Fluoridation is the greatest case of scientific fraud of this century, if not all time." Dr. Charles Gordon Heyd, Past President of the American Medical Association said: "I am appalled at the prospect of using water as a vehicle for drugs. Fluoride is a corrosive poison that will produce serious effects on a long- term basis. Any attempt to use water this way is deplorable."

Fluoride compounds are not biodegradable and are accumulative. No matter how little we are told is being added to our drinking water, fluoride will accumulate in our bones, teeth, in the environment and food chain when added to our drinking water.

Even if you believe the fluoride toothpaste myth, the fluoride to be added to Pinellas drinking water is not the pharmaceutical grade stuff in Colgate. It's hydrofluorisilicic acid --an industrial waste product. In Florida it comes from the processing of phosphate rock to make phosphate fertilizers, rock which also contains fluoride and silica. The phosphate rock is treated with sulfuric acid, which results in two gases: silicon tetrafluroide and hydrogen fluoride. The gases pass through scrubbers and react with water. Hydrofluorisilicic acid is formed, and becomes part of the "hazardous waste liquor" from the wet scubbers, along with lead, mercury, beryllium, radioactive material, arsenic and other pollutants. It is this impure mixture that is destined for our water supply as a fluoridating agent. This same mixture is illegal to dump at sea, in the Gulf of Mexico or even allow to drain into the rivers of Tampa Bay! So who wants fluoride? Special interest groups who want a convenient way to dump an industrial waste product And the Pinellas County Commissioners who voted 6 to 1 on August 26, 2003 to put it in our water.

A second purpose of Citizens for Safe Water (CSW) is to educate the public on the decision of the County Commission to put this hazardous industrial waste product into our drinking water. CSW feels it is virtually "forced medication of the masses" without the individual's permission and knowledge. Indeed, the Commission's meeting was held at 3:00 o'clock in the afternoon a time when most people work-- with little fanfare. It wasn't front page news, nor were letters sent to every home notifying all residents that the Commission was to make a decision on the quality of water -- a substance that constitutes about 60% of their human bodies!

The author of this article did her own research, looking into the history of water fluoridation. As early as 1850, fluoride emissions from the iron and copper industries poisoned crops, livestock and people. In early 1900's laws and lawsuits were starting. In 1933, 60 people died from fluoride air pollution in Belgium's Meuse Valley.

Meanwhile in 1920, the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) was under Treasury Secretary, Andrew W. Mellon, a founder and major stockholder of Alcoa The Aluminum Company of America. In 1931, PHS dentist, H. Trendley Dean, discovered that teeth in towns with high natural fluoride concentration in the drinking water, while stained and eroded, had fewer cavities than average. Leaders in moving us toward water fluoridation were connected to Alcoa. Fluoride safety research was mostly carried out by the University of Cincinnati's Kettering Laboratory, a school funded largely by Alcoa. In 1939, Alcoa-funded industry scientist Gerald J. Cox made the first public proposal the U.S. fluoridate its water supplies. During the war, fluoride pollution increased, especially from Alcoa as aluminum which was used for fighters and bombers. Despite hundreds of fluoride damage suits after WWII against industries, in 1947 Oscar R. Ewing, a long time Alcoa Lawyer, was appointed head of the Federal Security Agency, which placed him in charge of the Public Health Service. Under Ewing and his PR strategist, Edward L. Bernays, also Sigmund Freud's nephew, a national fluoridation campaign materialized. Bernays, known as the "father of public relations," pioneered Freud's psychological techniques and positioned fluoride, then known as a powerful bug and rat killer, as creating beautiful smiles for little children. Opponents were looked upon as crackpots.

Fluorides have also been used historically for mind control. At the end of WWII, the US government sent Charles Elliot Perkins, a research scientist, to take charge of the I.G. Farben chemical plants in Germany. There he learned of a scheme to control populations by mass medication of drinking water and noted that "The real purpose behind water fluoridation is to reduce the resistance of the masses to domination, control and loss of liberty." In his report to the Lee Foundation for Nutritional Research in October of 1954, he further said, "When the Nazis decided to go into Poland. . . the scheme of mass control through water medication was seized upon by the Russian Communists because it fitted ideally into their plans to Communize the world. . . Repeated doses of infinitesimal amounts of fluoride will in time reduce an individual`s power to resist domination, by slowly poisoning and narcotizing a certain area of the brain, thus making him submissive to the will of those who wish to govern him.

Fluorides are a key ingredient of many psychiatric drugs. Actually Prozac, scientific name Fluoxetine, is 94% fluoride. In 1984, it was estimated that 25% of the major tranquilizers contained fluoride. "Major tranquilizers" are often referred to as "anti-psychotics."

The US government puts out a MSDS "Material Safety Data Sheet" which contains information on safe handling and transportation of all chemicals. Of fluoride, it says, " avoid breathing fumes; avoid ingestion; wash thoroughly after handling, avoid contact with eyes or skin, use adequate ventilation."
